This privacy notice explains how I, as your child’s Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), collect, store, and use personal data about your child in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).Your child’s privacy is very important to me, and I am committed to handling all data responsibly, securely, and lawfully.

 

2. What Information Do I Collect?

In the course of providing speech and language therapy services, I may collect and hold the following types of personal and sensitive data:

•Child’s Information:

• Full name

• Date of birth

• Address

• School/educational setting details

• Medical history and diagnoses

• Communication and developmental history

• Reports from other professionals (e.g., audiologists, teachers)

• Audio or video recordings (only with explicit consent)

•Parental/Guardian Information:

• Full name

• Contact details (address, phone number, email)

• Relationship to the child

• Consent records

 

3. Why Do I Collect This Information?

I collect and use this information for the following purposes:

• To assess your child’s communication needs

• To plan and deliver appropriate therapy interventions

• To liaise with other professionals involved in your child’s care (with your consent)

• To monitor progress and outcomes

• To meet legal, regulatory, and safeguarding obligations

• For secure billing and invoicing

 

4. Lawful Basis for ProcessingUnder GDPR, the lawful bases for processing your child’s data are:

• Consent – You have given clear consent for processing specific data.

• Contract – The data is necessary for the provision of therapy services.

• Legal obligation – I may be legally required to retain some data (e.g., for safeguarding).• Vital interests – To protect a child’s life or wellbeing.

• Legitimate interests – Where it is necessary to support your child’s development, and your rights do not override this.

 

5. How Is Your Data Stored?

All records are stored securely:

• Paper notes are kept in locked cabinets

• Electronic records are stored on password-protected and encrypted devices.

• Emails and communications are handled via secure, GDPR-compliant platforms.I retain your child’s personal and professional data for 7years in line with professional guidelines

 

6.Who do I share your child's information with?

I only share your child’s information with others involved in their care and only with your explicit consent. This may include:• School staff (SENOs, teachers)

• Other allied health professionalsI will always ask for your consent before sharing information unless required by law (e.g., safeguarding concerns).

 

7. Your Rights Under GDPR

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data I hold about your child

• Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information

• Request deletion of data (in certain circumstances)

• Object to or restrict processing

• Withdraw consent at any time

• Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
